Proclamation commending the Communities in Action for Peace Youth Dragon Boat League's "Paddlers for Peace" for their commitment to learning how to work and live together peacefully within our communities.
Body
WHEREAS, many youth in Allegheny County have proven themselves to be dedicated to creating more peaceful communities; and
WHEREAS, at the 2005 Communities in Action for Peace Annual Youth Conference, participants developed the idea for a youth dragon boat racing league; and
WHEREAS, named Paddlers for Peace, this league allows youth ages 11-17 the opportunity to learn and practice valuable teamwork skills; and
WHEREAS, youth from throughout Allegheny County make up this diverse team, including those from Turtle Creek, Duquesne, the North Hills, Bethel Park, Squirrel Hill, McKeesport, and McKees Rocks; and
WHEREAS, the league has made great strides over the past several years; and
WHEREAS, in June 2008, the Paddlers for Peace earned first place in the Youth Division of the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Races for each of the three races in which they competed; and
WHEREAS, the Paddlers for Peace have also earned the distinction of racing at the state level, traveling to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to participate in a Dragon Boat Festival on the Susquehanna River; and
WHEREAS, the youth are mentored by dedicated members of the Pittsburgh Paddlefish, and also receive invaluable support from members of Communities in Action for Peace and the Three Rivers Rowing Association;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby commends the Paddlers for Peace for their demonstrated commitment to learning how to work together peacefully. You have proven yourselves to be role models among your peers and on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, we congratulate you for your hard work and wish you continued success in the future.
