Proclamation commending Dr. Sharon Hillier of University of Pittsburgh for receiving the Thomas Parran Award for lifetime achievement and for fighting to prevent the spread of HIV in women around the world.

WHEREAS, world class scientists reside in Allegheny County and conduct research beneficial to people around the world who are suffering from dangerous, incurable diseases; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sharon Hillier - the director of reproductive infectious disease research at University of Pittsburgh's Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences department - has committed her life to preventing and treating HIV in women around the world; and
WHEREAS, for her efforts, the American Sexually Transmitted Disease Association awarded Dr. Hillier the Thomas Parran Award, a lifetime achievement recognition named for the first dean of University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hillier is the head of the Microbicide Trials Network, a federally-funded project in the United States, Africa and India that tests preventive HIV medication in women; and
WHEREAS, her heed and commitment to fighting HIV has lead to breakthroughs in the prevention and spread of the virus in women, and although much still needs to be accomplished to fight HIV, her efforts have helped to further the worldwide goal of conquering the infection;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby commends Dr. Sharon Hillier for her lifetime of effort to fight and prevent HIV in women around the world. We wholeheartedly thank her for selflessly dedicating herself to this effort, and we hope others join in her endeavor by mirroring her examples of professionalism and sincerity.
