Proclamation recognizing and celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

WHEREAS, the fifth oldest franchise in the National Football League, the Pittsburgh Steelers were founded on July 8, 1933 by Arthur Joseph Rooney, affectionately known as “The Chief.” Mr. Rooney purchased the NFL franchise for $2,500, and over the next eight decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers have become a beloved part of the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the nation; and
WHEREAS, this year the Pittsburgh Steelers will celebrate 75 years of accomplishments and relive some of the team's most memorable history; and
WHEREAS, as part of the season long celebration of their 75th anniversary, the Pittsburgh Steelers have named a “Legends” team that represents the Steelers top players prior to 1970, and fans were given the chance to name an “All-Time Greatest” team that represents the top players in the history of the team; and
WHEREAS, the 75th Season Celebration will be led by Steelers Hall of Fame member Joe Greene, who wore the number 75, and will serve as Honorary Captain for the season; and
WHEREAS, a broad range of activities and events have been planned throughout the year, including a new 75th Season logo, which will be displayed on everything from the turf at Heinz Field to team uniforms, memorabilia and merchandise, and throwback uniforms that represent the look of the 1940's, '50's, and '60's, which will be worn by the team during two home games, just to name a few; and
WHEREAS, a 2,500 square-foot exhibit that chronicles each decade of the team's history was displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio and is now on display at Heinz Field;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby join in celebrating the Steelers 75th Anniversary Season, and we thank the team for bringing so many great moments to the Steel City. We commend the Pittsburgh Steel...
