Proclamation recognizing and commending Duquesne Light Company and Hosanna Industries for their efforts in providing assistance to families still impacted by the September 2005 Hurricane Ivan flooding.

WHEREAS, in all, 55,000 customers in Allegheny & Beaver counties lost power on September 17, 2004 due to flooding and other effects associated with Hurricane Ivan; and

WHEREAS, Duquesne Light Company crews worked around the clock to restore service in all weather conditions and sometimes at considerable danger to themselves, often working 16 hour shifts in order to complete service restoration on the night of September 19; and

WHEREAS, on February 23, 2005 Duquesne Light made a $100,000 donation to Hosanna Industries in support of efforts to rehabilitate homes damaged by the flood, and has linked sponsorship of the Duquesne Light Pittsburgh Home & Garden Show to recruit volunteers, donations and exhibitors to aid in the ongoing flood recovery and rebuilding of homes; and

WHEREAS, about one third of the 15,000 homes damaged by Hurricane Ivan in Southwestern Pennsylvania were occupied by low or very low income households, the majority of which were located in Allegheny and Beaver Counties; and

WHEREAS, Hosanna Industries has agreed to provide assistance to approximately 500 families in the form of repairs and/or rebuilding as funding allows, and has a plan in place to utilize its own personnel, qualified professional tradespersons willing to assist, and a substantial volunteer base in undertaking the necessary repairs;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council recognizes and commends Duquesne Light Company and Hosanna Industries for working with exceptional speed and effectiveness under difficult circumstances, and for cooperating so well to assist those left in need; and
