WHEREAS, each year since 1992, the National Engineers Week Future City Competition has invited young people to create a city of tomorrow in order to encourage the development of math and science skills and lay the foundation for a career in engineering; and

WHEREAS, the Future City Competition has become the nation's largest engineering education program, this year expected to reach 30,000 students in 1,100 schools; and

WHEREAS, on January 15, 2005, St. Bede School competed against over 30 area middle schools in the Pittsburgh regional Future City Competition at The Buhl Science Center, won both the Most Effective Use of Bridges and the Best Future City awards, and earned the opportunity to represent the Pittsburgh region in the Future City National Competition; and

WHEREAS, at the National Competition, held the week of February 20-26, 2005 in Washington, D.C., St. Bede won both the Excellence in Education for High-Tech Manufacturing Award and The People's Choice Award for the Best Future City;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council recognizes and commends the achievement, scholarship and teamwork of the students who designed St. Bede School's entry: Catherine Perego, Sean Hospodar, Jessica Packer, Dylan Dietrick, Luke Belechak, Catherine Stepehenson, Emily Ellis, Catharine Youngs, Richard Maher, Mike Leberknight; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby salutes the dedication and professionalism of the students' Teacher Moderator, Elizabeth Zewe Killmeyer, and the team's Engineer Mentor, Jim Garrett.
