Proclamation recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on the occasion of its Great Lakes Regional Conference and commending the sorority on its past and ongoing contributions to the community.
Body
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded in 1908 to cultivate and encourage exceptional scholastic performance and high ethical standards among young women; and
WHEREAS, the sorority has, during its 97 year history, promoted unity and friendship among college women, alleviated problems concerning girls and women, and maintained a progressive interest in college life; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha serves humanitarian interests throughout the world through a nucleus of more than 170,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa; and
WHEREAS, in recent years, Alpha Kappa Alpha has launched the Ivy Reading AKAdemy, an after school reading program for children in Kindergarten through the third grade, the Young Authors Program to nurture the creativity of youths in grades two through six, and the Health Babies, Healthy Lifestyles initiative, through which over 12,000 families have improved their awareness of the dangers of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha members donated over one million hours of volunteer service in the two years from July 2002 through July 2004; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha is currently holding its Great Lakes Regional Conference in Allegheny County;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council recognizes and commends Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on the occasion of its Great Lakes Regional Conference; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby salutes the accomplishments of Alpha Kappa Alpha and expresses its appreciation for its past and ongoing contributions to the community, and for its efforts in assisting to improve the overall quality of life of this region.
