Proclamation recognizing and commending Dr. Sheila L. Johnson for her many musical accomplishments and her dedication in the field of Gospel Music.
Body
WHEREAS, Dr. Sheila L. Johnson has served as a collaborator, composer and director in citywide and regional music projects held within Allegheny County and throughout the nation for over thirty years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson has served on the founding faculty of the Afro-American Music Institute of Pittsburgh and has served to inspire and develop young musicians from the community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson has passed her knowledge and experience on by serving on the faculty of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, as well as on the National Faculty and Board of Directors of the Gospel Music Educators Seminar; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson has devoted considerable time and effort to channeling young people toward using music as a means of avoiding destructive behavior, in part by founding the group Young People for Christ as an alternative to participating in violence; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson has composed numerous inspirational compositions and musical arrangements and has assisted diverse musical organizations throughout the country such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People National Convention Choir, the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education National Choir, and the Lott Carey Foreign Mission National Convention Choir;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize Dr. Sheila L. Johnson for her impact on this community and its citizens. Dr. Johnson's commitment serves as an inspiration to us all, and her consistent devotion to sharing the joy she takes in music is worthy of our sincerest thanks.
