Proclamation recognizing June 9, 2005 as "Public Defenders Day" in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, the Allegheny County Law Office of the Public Defender was founded in 1968 in accordance with the directives of the United States Supreme Court; and
WHEREAS, since that time, the Office of Public Defender has furnished legal counsel to anyone without sufficient funds where representation is constitutionally guaranteed; and
WHEREAS, by protecting the rights of the indigent citizens of this region, the Law Office of the Public Defender protects liberties for which generations of American patriots have fought; and
WHEREAS, the staff of the Law Office of the Public Defender, demonstrating a deep devotion to promoting social justice, have actively chosen to pursue this intellectually and emotionally challenging work; and
WHEREAS, in honor of the efforts and sacrifices of its staff, the Law Office of the Public Defender will be celebrating Public Defender Day on June 9, 2005.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and I, Allegheny County Council President Rich Fitzgerald do hereby commend the Allegheny County Law Office of the Public Defender and declare June 9, 2005 “Public Defender Day” in Allegheny County. May this occasion recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of the staff of the Allegheny County Law Office of the Public Defender, and may it serve to express our appreciation for the Office's past and ongoing contributions to the community and for its efforts in promoting justice in this region.
