Proclamation congratulating and honoring ACCESS and the Port Authority of Allegheny County for their continuing tradition of helping individuals in need secure the transportation services that they require.
Body
WHEREAS, ACCESS Transportation Systems, an entity sponsored by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, is one of the largest entities in the United States that provides transportation services required by the Americans With Disabilities Act for individuals who are unable to use fixed-route transportation systems; and
WHEREAS, ACCESS provides approximately 1.9 million rides each year for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and individuals with low incomes; and
WHEREAS, ACCESS makes remarkable use of coordination to provide service to all of Allegheny County 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on every day of the year from 6:00 a.m. through Midnight; and
WHEREAS, the services provided by ACCESS reflect the diverse needs of the community by including additional elements such as driver assistance, set routines, and accommodations for adults with small children where necessary; and
WHEREAS, the Port Authority and ACCESS received the United We Ride award from the United States Department of Transportation on May 24, 2005 in recognition of their effective, common-sense approach to serving those with transportation needs;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate and honor ACCESS and the Port Authority for their continuing tradition of helping individuals in need secure the transportation services that they require. This commitment to the dignity and well-being of the County's aged, disabled and needy residents both inspires us and arouses our deepest gratitude. On the occasion of their recognition by the United States Department of Transportation for their efficient assistance to individuals and families in our community, we commend both ACCESS and the Port Authority.
