Title

Proclamation proclaiming the month of October 2007 "Fire Prevention Month" in Allegheny County.

Body

WHEREAS, the great Chicago Fire of 1871, causing most of its damage on October 9th, killed more than 250 people, left 10,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres; and

WHEREAS, in 1922, President Woodrow Wilson declared October 9th as National Fire Prevention Day, and the week of October 9th has since been declared National Fire Prevention Week, becoming the longest running public health and safety observance on record; and

WHEREAS, fire deaths due to smoke inhalation outnumber deaths due to burns by more than two to one, and properly functioning smoke detectors are the first line of defense against fire; and

WHEREAS, the Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services recommends the installation of smoke detectors in homes and the formulation of a fire escape plan to prevent risks associated with fires; and

WHEREAS, annual observances such as National Fire Prevention Week and National Fire Prevention Month are exceptional opportunities to focus on fire hazards, and it is beneficial to practice fire safety every day;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of Allegheny County does hereby proclaim the month of October 2007 as “Fire Prevention Month” in Allegheny County in order to promote public awareness of fire safety.  Furthermore, we encourage all residents of Allegheny County to install smoke detectors and create and practice fire escape plans to prevent deaths due to smoke inhalation.
