Proclamation proclaiming the month of October 2007 "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Allegheny County.
Body
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among American women; and
WHEREAS, research shows that deaths from breast cancer could be reduced by at least 30 percent if women follow breast cancer screening recommendations, including routine mammography, regular examinations by a physician, and monthly self-examinations; and
WHEREAS, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures; and
WHEREAS, what began with a goal of attracting 1,000 people, the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure has grown into an event to celebrate and remember special women in the lives of more than 35,000 individuals who attend the Race; and
WHEREAS, during 2006, the Pittsburgh Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure granted $1.7 million to organizations dedicated to fighting breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we renew our commitment to fighting this disease, raising awareness, and supporting those affected by breast cancer;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby proclaim the month of October 2007 “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in Allegheny County. We commend the efforts of the Pittsburgh Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and we call upon government officials, businesses, communities, health care professionals, educators, volunteers, and the residents of Allegheny County to continue our strong commitment to preventing, treating, and ultimately curing breast cancer.
