Proclamation celebrating the Lawrenceville Historical Society's annual Stephen Foster Music and Heritage Festival.

WHEREAS, the Lawrenceville Historical Society will hold its annual Stephen Foster Music and Heritage Festival, also called “Doo Dah Days,” on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Foster, considered the founder of “pop music,” was born on July 4, 1826 at his family's estate in Lawrenceville; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Foster's repertoire of songs included still well-known standards such as “Oh! Susanna,” “Beautiful Dreamer,” and “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River)”; and

                     

WHEREAS, in celebration of Stephen Foster and his legacy, Doo Dah Days will include folk bands playing Foster-era music, costumed re-enactors portraying Foster's mother and his wife, food vendors, children's activities, and horse and wagon rides; and

 

WHEREAS, additionally, trolley tours of the cemetery will be given, with trips made to the graves of Foster, his wife, and his daughter; and

 

WHEREAS, the event, which is free and open to the public, will bring the community together to recognize on of Lawrenceville's, and likewise, one of Pittsburgh's most famous sons;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council joins with the Lawrenceville Historical Society in celebration of its annual Stephen Foster Music and Heritage Festival.  We commend you on your commitment to highlighting the contributions and achievements of Stephen Foster, and wish you success as you bring the Foster era back to life.
