Allegheny County Council is proud to present this Certificate of Recognition to Mr. Joe Walters, of West Mifflin, for his service in World War II. In August 1943, Mr. Walters was serving as a tail gunner in a B-17 bomber when his plane was shot down over the border of Germany and Belgium. He survived by parachuting out of the doomed plane, and then he spent the next six months escaping Axis powers with help from the underground resistance movement. He made it to safety through Spain. Mr. Walters is the recipient of a Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. On July 16, 2013, Mr. Walters celebrated his 100th birthday with a round of golf at Westwood Golf Club in West Mifflin. On Veteran's Day, November 11, 2013, Mr. Walters was honored during a flag presentation ceremony at VFW Post 188 in Duquesne. We honor Mr. Walters for his bravery, dedication, and commitment to serving his country with pride. We also thank Mr. Walters for his service and sacrifices, and we thank him for the contributions he has made to the United States of America.
