Allegheny County Council is proud to present this Certificate of Recognition to The Honorable Thomas Sumpter, of Schenley Heights, for his service to the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education. The Board is the policy-making body for the school district, which operates 65 schools with 5,180 full-time employees and serves 29,445 students with an operating budget of $533.6 million. Mr. Sumpter was first elected to represent District 3 in 2005 and served as both first and second Vice President. Mr. Sumpter was elected President of the Board in 2013. The schools in District 3 include Pittsburgh Miller Pre-K-5; Pittsburgh Milliones 6-12; Pittsburgh Science and Technology 6-12; and Pittsburgh Weil Pre-K-5. He has chaired the Education Committee, the Information and Technology Committee, Board Effectiveness Committee, and he has served as a member of the Negotiations, Government and Ad Hoc committees. In addition, Mr. Sumpter has represented the Board at the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and Head Start Policy Council. We recognize Mr. Sumpter for his dedicated service to the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education as Vice President and President, and we thank him for his commitment to ensuring the best education possible for every student.
