Proclamation thanking The Honorable James “Jim” Ferlo, former member and president of Pittsburgh City Council and member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, for his commitment and dedication to public service.

WHEREAS, throughout the history of Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, talented officials who possess great knowledge and determination exhibit exemplary leadership in elected positions and contribute invaluably to our communities, our country and our world; and

WHEREAS, a native of Rome, New York, Mr. James “Jim” Ferlo came to Pittsburgh in 1969 to protest the Vietnam War, made a name for himself fighting over historic preservation and other battles on Pittsburgh City Council, and became a chief critic of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas; and

WHEREAS, because of his leadership, confidence and community presence, Mr. Ferlo was selected by the members of Pittsburgh City Council District 7 to serve as their representative in 1987. Mr. Ferlo also had the distinction of serving two terms as Council President from 1994 to 1997; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Ferlo was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 2003 to represent the 38th Senatorial District. He served as the Minority Chairman of the Senate Law and Justice Committee, Minority Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and as a member of three additional standing committees: Consumer Protection & Professional Licensure, Education, and Finance; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure, Senator Ferlo sponsored or co-sponsored legislation focused on small businesses, local development, green jobs, health care, historic preservation, civil rights, the elderly and environmental protection;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby thank The Honorable Jim Ferlo for his 25 years of public service and advocacy.
