WHEREAS, since 2008 Ms. Shimira Williams has been owner and operator of TekStart, a day care facility that specifically focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects; and
WHEREAS, TekStart, located in the Lincoln neighborhood of Pittsburgh, serves children between the ages of 3 and 13 that come from low to middle income families and may not otherwise have the opportunity or support necessary to cultivate their interest in STEM areas; and
WHEREAS, due to the importance of her work, TekStart has been the recipient of several grants and gifts from organizations such as the Sprout Fund and Saint Vincent College's Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media, allowing her to provide new and exciting opportunities for the children enrolled in her program; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County is proud to recognize Ms. Williams for her passionate and successful efforts to provide science and technology learning opportunities to the youth of our County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby commend Ms. Shimira Williams for her tireless efforts and advocacy of STEM subjects and thanks her for the significant positive impact she is able to provide to Allegheny County's leaders and innovators of tomorrow.
