Body...

WHEREAS, Andrew "Lefty" Palm, a United Steelworkers union official who oversaw negotiations with major U.S. steel producers during some of the industry's direst days, passed away from this life on Friday, February 21, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Palm's nickname, a gift from his family because he was left-handed, followed him throughout his long career. Mr. Palm began his career as a union steward with Enamel Products Co. of McKeesport, Pennsylvania and later became president of the plant's local union; and
WHEREAS, in 1982, Mr. Palm was elected as the director for United Steelworkers District 15, representing workers in the Mon Valley. He held this position through a series of consolidations that broadened the region he was responsible for to the entire state; and

WHEREAS, because of his leadership, Mr. Palm was elected vice president of the international union in 2001, representing workers of major steel and aluminum producers, rubber companies and other industries; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Palm was a champion for the workers, and earned a reputation among union and industry officials as a tough but fair negotiator, always placing the needs of those in his District at the forefront of his agenda;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby honor in memoriam Andrew "Lefty" Palm for his unwavering commitment to serving others. We acknowledge Mr. Palm as an inspiration to many for his dedication to preserving worker rights and benefits in Allegheny County.
