Proclamation naming April 28, 2014 as "Workers Memorial Day" in Allegheny County.
Body...
WHEREAS, workers in Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania deserve to work in a safe and healthy environment; and
WHEREAS, the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that in 2012, more than 4,300 workers suffered fatal workplace injuries and nearly 3 million individuals suffered nonfatal work-related injuries and illnesses, and experts estimate that at least 50,000 deaths occur annually as a result of occupational diseases; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, 163 workers were lost through fatal workplace accidents in Pennsylvania, with the majority occurring in the transportation and warehousing and construction industry sectors; and
WHEREAS, since 1989, April 28th has been recognized nationally and locally as Workers Memorial Day in remembrance of workers who have been injured or killed on the job; and
WHEREAS, County Council wishes to pay tribute to workers who have died or who have been injured or disabled in workplace accidents, to honor the contributions of Allegheny County and Pennsylvania's workforce and to call for increased workplace safety;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby declare April 28, 2014 to be "Workers Memorial Day" in Allegheny County.
