Body...

WHEREAS, on Saturday, February 28, 2015, The Pittsburgh Experiment will celebrate its 60th anniversary at the OMNI William Penn Hotel; and

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Experiment began through the ministry of Rev. Dr. Samuel M. Shoemaker, who was called from Calvary Episcopal Church in New York City to come to Pittsburgh in 1952 to serve at Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside; and

WHEREAS, Rev. Shoemaker was a valued pastor, a nationally known preacher, and a prolific author, whose contributions and service to Alcoholics Anonymous have had a worldwide effect; he used the very same principles of love, acceptance, and availability to found The Pittsburgh Experiment to serve men and women in the workplace; and

WHEREAS, on February 25, 1955, the first Trustees established The Pittsburgh Experiment, the news of which brought national attention to our region through articles in Time magazine, Fortune magazine, and Parade Magazine; and

WHEREAS, the staff and volunteers of The Pittsburgh Experiment have demonstrated the love of God through their ministry of availability and through the power of the 30-Day Prayer Experiment; and

WHEREAS, the people whose lives have been changed by The Pittsburgh Experiment have gone on to make a positive, lasting impact on the people of our region and beyond, including the formation of such important community organizations as the Coalition for Christian Outreach, the Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation, and Trinity School for Ministry, among many others; and

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Experiment has been acknowledged by The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and a variety of other organizations and media as one of the most influential non-profit organizations in the region; and

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Experiment continues to live out the founding vision of Rev. Shoemaker that Pittsburgh would someday be a "city under God" and "a spiritual pilot plant for America;"

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council hereby congratulates the Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers of The Pittsburgh Experiment on the occasion of its momentous 60th Anniversary.
