Proclamation honoring in memoriam Mr. Darrell Hess, former chairman of the board for the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and well-known figure in the Steel Valley sports community.

      WHEREAS, Mr. Darrell Hess, a former chairman of the board for the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and a well-known figure in the Steel Valley sports community, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the age of 82; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hess graduated from Slippery Rock University and earned a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hess began his career as a guidance counselor at Munhall High School and later worked in the guidance departments in the Fox Chapel Area and West Mifflin school districts; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hess was a longtime Pitt athletic booster and wrote a weekly sports column for the Valley Mirror; Mr. Hess was the voice of the community, writing articles highlighting the athletic and academic achievements of local high school students; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hess organized many fundraising events across the region, including the annual golf tournament at Westwood Golf Club which benefited the Homestead Lions Club; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Hess had been involved with the western chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame since its inception in 1969; In addition to serving as chairman of the board, Mr. Hess served as president of the western chapter for a short tenure in the 1970s; He worked with the executive committee to create the hall of fame ballot every year and helped to organize the annual banquet in May;
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby offer its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Darrell Hess.  Mr. Hess' legacy of serving our community is an inspiration to this Council and to the citizens of Allegheny County.
