Proclamation congratulating The Honorable Harold Berkoben upon the occasion of his retirement after 58 years of dedicated service to the Borough of Whitehall.

Body...

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhood and the community as a whole; individuals such as The Honorable Harold Berkoben, who has placed his stamp of character and hard work throughout the community, as both a public servant and strong leader; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Berkoben, a longtime Whitehall resident, is a combat veteran of the Korean War and a graduate of Geneva College; He has served on the Whitehall Borough Council for more than 15 years, serving three terms as Council President; Mr. Berkoben has represented Whitehall as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Hills Area Council of Governments (SHACOG) for 10 years and served as the organization’s President in 2006; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Berkoben was the force behind installing the “Welcome to Whitehall” signs that sit at the nearly dozen entrances to the Borough of Whitehall; Mr. Berkoben is also responsible for the beautification project of the Whitehall municipal building, which is now lined with nearly 60 paintings, maps and old photographs; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Berkoben has been President of the Streets Run Watershed Association since its founding in 2001 and led the efforts to add a rain garden on the roof of the Whitehall police station and was successful with getting residents to use rain barrels; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Berkoben has been an active member of the South Whitehall Athletic Association for 20 years, and served as its President for eight years; In 2014, Mr. Berkoben was named Whitehall’s Citizen of the Year;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby recognizes The Honorable Harold Berkoben for his contributions to the Borough of Whitehall and to the enhancement of the ...
