Proclamation honoring Sidney Kushner for bringing joy to children battling cancer by founding the Pittsburgh nonprofit, Connecting Children with Champions.

WHEREAS, after meeting a young cancer patient named Andy during his sophomore year at Brown University, Sidney Kushner founded CCChampions (Connecting Children with Champions), a Pittsburgh nonprofit that pairs children diagnosed with cancer with local celebrities to help fulfill dreams and create lifelong friendships; and
WHEREAS, CCChampions facilitates innovative, six month-long friendships with the most inspirational role models in our community, including artists, dancers, firefighters, police officers, teachers and athletes from the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, just to name a few; and
WHEREAS, CCChampions works with the pediatric oncology department of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC as well as child specialists and licensed social workers to help mold each experience individually; and
WHEREAS, CCChampions helps to create positive developmental moments for each child so that they can combat the serious psychosocial side effects that accompany the illness and steer kids with cancer back on the path of being a happy and healthy child; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, CCChampions has helped 150 kids by providing meaningful long-term support to help them throughout their cancer journey; and
WHEREAS, Sidney Kushner and CCChampions has been recognized and featured in the Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Stanford’s “Top 100 Student Entrepreneur,” the Boston Celtics Heroes Among Us, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and Whirl Magazine;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby honor Sidney Kushner for bringing joy to children battling cancer by Connecting Children with Champions.
