Proclamation declaring Tuesday, July 7, 2015 to be “George R. Jucha, Jr. Day” in honor of the life and work of George R. Jucha, Jr.

Body...

WHEREAS, George R. Jucha, Jr., is a native son of Allegheny County, born in Pittsburgh in 1964, graduated from Chartiers Valley High School and Slippery Rock University, and residing most recently in Moon Township; and

WHEREAS, he extended his love and protection to the natural world and to all its creatures, through hiking, exploring and advocating for animals; and

WHEREAS, he was a beloved and respected teacher at the University of Pittsburgh, being voted 16th in the United States in a national ranking of college professors; and

WHEREAS, he contributed to his community as a small business owner and employer, through his ownership of Independent Recycling Services, LLC, of Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS, through his valuable insight and service, George R. Jucha, Jr. assisted Allegheny County Council as a “Friend of Deer Lakes Park” and also, as a member of Protect Our Parks, by striving to bring information about fracking to the attention of the Council, thereby performing a fundamental civic duty; and

WHEREAS, in his tireless advocacy for the betterment of the citizens of Allegheny County, George personified founding father George Washington’s belief that “Democratical States must always feel before they can see: it is this that makes their Governments slow, but the people will be right at last.”; and

WHEREAS, George R. Jucha, Jr’s, unexpected death on June 7th of this year was a terrible loss to his family, friends, students and coworkers, and to this community;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County does hereby express its gratitude for the life and work of George R. Jucha, Jr., and extends its condolences to his family (his parents, Antoinette Zombek Jucha and George R. Jucha, Sr., brother Joseph Jucha and his extended family), and does hereby ...
