WHEREAS, Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are proud to be showcased in many notable films and television series broadcast throughout the nation and the world. The film industry in our region bolsters our economy and provides unique views and visions of our regional assets, land, bridges, and rivers; and
WHEREAS, the film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was filmed on location in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, highlighting the beauty of our region while telling a powerful story of friendship and personal struggle; and
WHEREAS, Jesse Andrews, the film’s screenwriter, and author of novel that the film was based upon, was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the film was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews and received the Audience Award and Grand Jury prize for U.S. Drama at the 31st Sundance Film Festival. The film was distributed and released nationally by Fox Searchlight Pictures on June 12, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Council thanks everyone involved in the production of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl for their hard work and dedication to making such a high quality and bright film right here in Allegheny County; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize Pittsburgh native, screenwriter Jesse Andrews, director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, producers Jeremy Dawson, Dan Fogelman, Steven M. Rales, and the incredibly talented cast and crew for showcasing Pittsburgh in this meaningful film. We hereby declare June 16, 2015 to be “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Day” in Allegheny County.
