Proclamation recognizing Jennifer England, Gisele Fetterman and Leah Lizarondo for cutting waste and relieving hunger through the establishment of 412 Food Rescue.

 

Body...

 

WHEREAS, on average, 40% of food in the United States is wasted; this translates to 20 pounds of food per person per month worth $165 billion a year, and at the same time, one in seven U.S. households is food-insecure according to federal statistics; and

 

WHEREAS, according to Feeding America, 171,660 people in Allegheny County are food insecure, 43,090 of whom are children; and

 

WHEREAS, 412 Food Rescue works with food retailers, wholesalers, restaurants, caterers, universities and other food providers to rescue unsellable but perfectly good food and directly distributing to communities in need; and

 

WHEREAS, founded by Gisele Fetterman of The Free Store and Leah Lizarondo of The Brazen Kitchen, 412 Food Rescue is a rapid response organization that utilizes technology to aggregate and match food donors and beneficiaries and mobilizes a community of volunteers to efficiently transport food between locations; and

 

WHEREAS, through 412 Food Rescue, Ms. Fetterman, Ms. Lizarondo and Project Leader Jennifer England directly impact our community’s health and sustainability by cutting waste and relieving hunger;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize Gisele Fetterman and Leah Lizarondo for establishing 412 Food Rescue, and we thank Ms. Fetterman, Ms. Lizarondo, and Ms. England for your efforts to cut waste and alleviate hunger, thereby improving the quality of life in Allegheny County.
