Proclamation recognizing the Gladstone High School Reunion celebrating the class of 1965 on September 12, 2015 at the Grand View Golf Club.

 

Body...

 

                     WHEREAS, Gladstone School, located on the corner of Hazelwood Avenue and Gladstone Street in the City of Pittsburgh’s 15th Ward, was dedicated on May 7, 1915; and

 

WHEREAS, the school, designed by architect O.M. Topp, replaced the nearby Hazelwood Elementary School. In 1923 an addition to the structure was completed that included several new classrooms and an auditorium that could accommodate approximately four hundred students. In 1926 a new building was built that was connected to the original structure which contained fourteen classrooms, two playrooms, a swimming pool, and two gymnasiums; and

 

WHEREAS, Gladstone School is the only building in the entire Pittsburgh public school system that began as an elementary school, changed to a junior high school in 1923, served as a senior high school in 1958, and became a middle school in 1976; and

 

WHEREAS, on August 28, 1958, Mr. Arthur W. Thomas became principal of Gladstone High School and under his administration the school was gradually transformed into an operable and successful high school; and

 

WHEREAS, football and basketball teams were organized and the first football game was played on September 29, 1958.  The Gladstonian, the school newspaper, made its appearance in September 1960, to be followed by the publication of the senior yearbook, The Blazer, in May 1961.  Gladstone’s initial senior class consisting of 33 students graduated on the evening of January 24, 1961;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize the history of the Gladstone School, and we congratulate the Gladstone High School Class of 1965 and join with them in celebration of their 50th Class Reunion.
