Proclamation honoring Kathryn Talerico for her selection as the Western Pennsylvania delegate to the JDRF Children’s Congress 2015.

WHEREAS, thirteen-year-old Kathryn Talerico, of McCandless, was selected as the Western Pennsylvania delegate for the JDRF Children’s Congress 2015; and
WHEREAS, Kathryn was chosen from over 1,500 applications sent from across the United States of America, the District of Columbia (DC) and several other countries; and
WHEREAS, Kathryn joined 165 delegates, ranging in ages from 4 to 17, in Washington, D.C. from July 13-15, 2015, to tell their stories and urge Federal lawmakers to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D); and
WHEREAS, as a participant in JDRF Children’s Congress, Kathryn and other delegates had a unique and empowering opportunity to help Members of Congress understand what life with type 1 diabetes is like, including the financial, medical and emotional costs of the disease, and why research to find the cure for diabetes and its complications is so critical; and
WHEREAS, Kathryn urged U.S. representatives and senators to continue federal funding for type 1 diabetes research through the Special Diabetes Program (SDP), to provide coverage for continuous glucose monitors (CGM) by Medicare, and raised awareness for the need to advance the development of an artificial pancreas (AP);
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby honor Kathryn Talerico for her selection as the Western Pennsylvania delegate to the JDRF Children’s Congress 2015, and we thank her for demonstrating great resilience and bravery in sharing her story to help spur support for type 1 diabetes research to bring us closer to a world without T1D.
