Allegheny County Council presents this Certificate of Recognition to the Mon-Yough Adult Retardation Center (MYARC), of McKeesport, upon the momentous occasion of its 50th anniversary.  MYARC began when a few dedicated people recognized the community’s need for an activity center to benefit people 18 years of age and older with intellectual disabilities.  On September 28, 1962, the group met with representatives from various civic, social and fraternal organizations to discuss the possibility of establishing a center to service adults with intellectual disabilities.  Under the leadership of Bernadette Weiskircher, the Mon-Yough Adult Retardation Center was formed with support from volunteer community groups, parents, friends and relatives of participants. MYARC provides monthly recreational programs, themed parties and dances, an annual picnic, Christmas Party with Santa and other fun, social activities.  The name MYARC inspired the motto, “The ARC of light that never fails.”  This Council congratulates MYARC upon its 50th anniversary, and we thank the organization for its dedication to serving people with intellectual disabilities in the community.
