Proclamation thanking Lawrence and Stanley Levine for their many years of service to the community as business owners of Levine Brothers Hardware and the Duquesne Village Shopping Center.

 

Body...

 

WHEREAS, our small businesses represent what is best about our Nation, the idea that with determination and responsibility, anyone can build a better life for themselves and their loved ones; and

 

WHEREAS, the first Levine Brothers Hardware store opened in downtown Duquesne in 1922 by brothers, Harry and Abraham Levine. Lawrence and Stanley Levine, the only children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry and Cecile Levine, took over the business in 1952 after the death of their father. In 1960, the downtown Duquesne store was forced to close as a result of redevelopment and eminent domain and moved to 337 E. Eighth Avenue in Homestead; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1956, the Levine family opened and managed retail space of the Duquesne Village shopping center, located on Homeville Road in West Mifflin; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2003, Levine Brothers Hardware closed after 81 years of serving the community. This year, the Levine family sold the Duquesne Village shopping center after 59 years of providing small business owners with opportunities and creating jobs for thousands of employees;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby thank Lawrence and Stanley Levine for their many years of service to the community and for fostering the entrepreneurial spirit in Allegheny County.
