Proclamation recognizing the 45th annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert to be held November 2-7, 2015.

WHEREAS, the University of Pittsburgh will host its 45th annual Jazz Seminar and Concert November 2-7, 2015 with legendary jazz musicians performing under the direction of Geri Allen, pianist, associate professor, and director of Pitt’s Jazz Studies Program, which is in the Department of Music within the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences; and
WHEREAS, the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert, founded by former Pitt Jazz Studies Program Director, Nathan Davis, was the first academic jazz seminar in the country to feature international artists connecting with aspiring student musicians in a lecture format, then performing together as an ensemble; and
WHEREAS, guest jazz artists scheduled to perform this year include Kenny Barron (piano); Mino Cinelu (percussion); Jimmy Cobb (drums); Robin Eubanks (trombone); Robert Hurst (bass); Jimmy Owens (trumpet); Tineke Postma (saxophone); and Pharoah Sanders (tenor saxophone); and
WHEREAS, in the William Pitt Union, plaques bear the images of musicians who have been inducted into Pitt’s International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame, established in 1977. Pitt is also home to the University of Pittsburgh-Sonny Rollins International Jazz Archives, one of the world’s premier collections of jazz-related memorabilia;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize the 45th annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert, and we express our gratitude to Pitt’s Jazz Studies Program and join in celebration of Pittsburgh’s jazz history, heritage and culture.
