Proclamation recognizing the inaugural “Dining in the Dark” fundraiser on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Tolerico’s Restaurant in Monroeville, Pennsylvania benefitting Pittsburgh puppies in training from the Gallant Hearts Guide Dog Center.

WHEREAS, the Gallant Hearts Guide Dog Center in Mississippi has been training guide dogs since 2009. The center’s founder, Rebecca Floyd, is blind and raises and has had a Doberman as her guide dog since 1968. The dogs are provided at no cost to those who are blind or have severe visual impairment; and
WHEREAS, Gallant Hearts have puppy raisers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that provide a nurturing home environment where they teach house manners and basic obedience; and
WHEREAS, socialization skills are taught by taking the puppies into the community where they can become familiar with the sights and sounds they will encounter as guide dogs; and
WHEREAS, the guide dog receives about 120 hours of harness training and before being placed, the dog must master a lengthy list of competencies; and
WHEREAS, the training as well as all veterinary care and food are provided by Gallant Hearts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize the inaugural “Dining in the Dark” fundraiser on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Tolerico’s Restaurant in Monroeville, Pennsylvania benefitting Pittsburgh puppies in training from the Gallant Hearts Guide Dog Center.
