Proclamation honoring Mr. Joel Reed in memoriam and his legacy of promoting excellence and diversity in education.

WHEREAS, Mr. Joel Reed, of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, loving husband to Ernestine, his wife of 48 years, loving father to his daughter Shelley and a doting grandfather to Savaan and Alex, passed from this life on October 30, 2015 at the age of 72; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 6, 1942 as the only child to the union of the late Dorothy (Edwards) Hill and the late Joseph Reed. Joel graduated from Schenley High School, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University, and his Master of Education and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. As a member of Penn State’s Gamma Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Joel enjoyed the special bonds of unity and brotherhood that continued throughout his adult life; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was a passionate administrator and educator at Penn State University, Carlow College, the University of Pittsburgh, Woodland Hills and Pittsburgh Public School Districts. During his tenure at Pitt, Mr. Reed served as an instructor in the New Careers Program, Director of University Community Educational Program, the TRIO program in Arts and Sciences, Assistant Dean in the College of General Studies, Project Director of Student Support Services, Director of Recruitment and Orientation and Curriculum Coordinator for Investing Now; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was most proud of being recognized for outstanding leadership as President of the Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program, as well as his curriculum endeavors and his work as Chair of the Pittsburgh Job Corps Scholarship Committee;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby honor in memoriam Mr. Joel Reed, and we offer our sincerest condolences to Mr. Reed’s family and friends. Mr. Reed’s legacy of promoting excellence and diversity in education will be car...
