Proclamation recognizing the 18th Annual Summit Against Racism and declaring Saturday, January 23, 2016 to be “Black and White Reunion Day” in Allegheny County.

Body...

WHEREAS, the Black and White Reunion, which was formed in 1996 to renew a collaborative spirit in addressing inequality and division in society, hosts the 18th Annual Summit Against Racism on Saturday, January 23, 2016; and

WHEREAS, the Black and White Reunion rekindles the spirit of the 1960s, and brings together a “reunion” of black and white people in a collaborative spirit to address the race and class inequality and divisions in our society; and

WHEREAS, the Black and White Reunion has grown over the years to include like-minded citizens and community leaders in the region who provide education, advocacy and leadership for many campaigns and programs in support of racial justice and reconciliation in the region; and

WHEREAS, the Summit Against Racism is a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is an opportunity for citizens to recommit to the struggle for civil rights, economic justice and peace for which Dr. King and many others have given their lives; and

WHEREAS, the 18th Annual Summit Against Racism will take place at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary with the theme “Power Concedes Nothing Without a Demand,” a quote from Frederick Douglass in 1857, before the American Civil War;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby commend the Black and White Reunion for their efforts to promote racial harmony amongst the people of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, and we acknowledge the Summit Against Racism for exploring creative and effective ways to affirm the message of racial tolerance and to celebrate the memory and message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
