Proclamation recognizing the Bengali Association of Pittsburgh and naming Saturday, February 13, 2016 as a “Day of Learning” in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is fortunate to have organizations, such as the Bengali Association of Pittsburgh (BAP), dedicated to raising awareness of Bengali culture and the significance that Hindu traditions weave into the diverse fabric of our society; and
WHEREAS, this year, the Hindu festival, Vasant Panchami, and Saraswati Pujo, will be held on February 13, 2016 to celebrate spring, or Basant, and Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning and the arts; and
WHEREAS, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped all over the country by people interested in speech, wisdom and learning; and
WHEREAS, on February 13, 2016, the Bengali Association of Pittsburgh will offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati at the Hindu Jain temple in Monroeville; and
WHEREAS, since our County is home to several major universities and a vibrant cultural arts community, it is fitting and proper that we recognize a day of learning in Allegheny County;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, does hereby proclaim Saturday, February 13, 2016 as a “Day of Learning” in Allegheny County. Furthermore, we commend the Bengali Association of Pittsburgh for their ongoing efforts to promote Bengali culture and awareness and we thank the organization for its significant contributions to our community.
