Proclamation congratulating the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department upon the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

Body...

WHEREAS, in 1916, a few men organized the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania with a hose cart that they pulled to local fires. In 1924, they purchased their first motorized piece of fire equipment, a new open-cab American LaFrance chain-driven pumper. In 1929, the group became chartered as a nonprofit charitable corporation; and

WHEREAS, in 1945, the volunteers purchased the Bonosky property on Bower Hill Road where the current Bridgeville Borough Building stands. The original building also housed the fire department. The firefighters moved into a new fire station and social hall at 370 Commercial Street in 1997; and

WHEREAS, the station, which was built without using tax dollars, has four bays to hold the company’s five vehicles: an ‘88 KME heavy pumper, a ‘77 American LaFrance heavy pumper, an ‘03 American LaFrance/Salisbury heavy rescue truck, ‘97 Dodge Pickup and an ‘82 Pierce 100-foot ladder tower. The Chartiers Room is a spacious banquet hall that can accommodate 100 to 300 guests and is known as “Bridgeville’s Best Kept Secret”; and

WHEREAS, the Bridgeville VFD has 50 active members and participates in community events, including the Memorial Day Parade, Halloween Parade and Santa’s arrival in Bridgeville;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department upon the momentous occasion of its 100th Anniversary.
