Proclamation congratulating the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania upon the occasion of its 100th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, the welfare of the citizens of southwestern Pennsylvania is greatly enriched by the purposeful endeavors of individuals and organizations committed to the preservation and protection of our environment, and the enhancement of, and appreciation for, our natural surroundings; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1916, the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, a chapter of the National Audubon Society and our region’s premier environmental education and conservation organization, is celebrating its Centennial on March 24, 2016; and
WHEREAS, the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania encourages lifelong environmental learning through its nature centers and reserves, including Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve (Fox Chapel, Allegheny County), Succop Nature Park (Butler, Butler County), and Todd Nature Reserve (Sarver, Butler County), encompassing more than 500 tranquil acres, 14 miles of hiking trails, educational and outreach programs and the Audubon Center for Native Plants; and
WHEREAS, the dedicated efforts of volunteers, members, and staff of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, played a critical role in Pennsylvania’s rescue efforts of Bald Eagles from the threat of extinction. Today, there are three Bald Eagle nesting sites in Allegheny County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and pay tribute to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania upon the occasion of its 100th Anniversary, and we thank the organization for its commitment to the protection of birds, other wildlife, and their habitats, thereby maintaining the health and beauty of our region.
