Allegheny County Council is proud to present this Certificate of Recognition to John Dindak, West Homestead Fire Chief, for his heroic actions on Sunday, March 6, 2016 when he responded to a residential fire in the 1200 block of Cascade Drive. Chief Dindak, who lives nearby and was first on scene, suffered from smoke inhalation when he entered the home and tried to save the family’s three dogs. Craig Siniawski, West Homestead Volunteer Fire Department’s Rescue Captain, who lives across the street from the fire, was on scene and utilizing a garden hose and attempting to knock down visible fire. Ken Hudak, a neighbor who is not a member of the fire department, provided assistance to Captain Siniawski. Chief Dindak placed himself at great risk trying to find the pets. He found and removed them from the structure, two dogs did not survive, but Chief Dindak was able to rescue one family dog. The West Homestead Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by Edgewood, Homestead, and Munhall fire departments. The fire was contained to the basement. This Council thanks Chief Dindak, Captain Siniawski and Mr. Hudak for placing themselves at great risk while attempting to help a neighbor. We commend their bravery and express our deepest gratitude for their heroic actions.
