WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) Chapter is honored to host the APRI Northeast Regional Conference being held April 8-10, 2016 at the Westin Convention Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, A. Philip Randolph was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement and the American Labor Movement, who organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), the nation’s first Black Labor Union; and
WHEREAS, A. Philip Randolph promoted unionism throughout the Black community and helped to organize workers from Virginia shipyards to elevator operators in New York City; and
WHEREAS, A. Philip Randolph was an outspoken advocate for equality and took a leading role in efforts to redress discrimination in employment and the armed forces. He was a principal organizer with Bayard Rustin of the 1963 March on Washington; and
WHEREAS, A. Philip Randolph was awarded the presidential Medal of Freedom for his lifelong work for universal civil rights; and
WHEREAS, this Council recognizes the commitment to continue Mr. Randolph’s important work by all APRI Chapters in the Northeast Region, led by President Richard Womack;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby welcome members of the APRI Chapters attending the A. Philip Randolph Institute Northeast Regional Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
