Proclamation declaring Friday, April 29, 2016 to be “YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Stand Against Racism Day” in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is pleased to join the YWCA’s Stand Against Racism, a national campaign designed to build a strong community and partnership between those who are working to achieve racial and social justice and also raise awareness about the negative impact that institutional and structural racism has on today’s society; and

WHEREAS, from April 28-May 1, more than 750 sites across 44 states and the District of Columbia will sponsor events aimed at encouraging dialog and coming up with solutions in an effort to eliminate racism and promote freedom and justice; and

WHEREAS, on Friday, April 29, 2016, the Greater Pittsburgh YWCA Center for Race and Gender Equity will host a silent vigil at their downtown location to demonstrate its advocacy and commitment to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all; and

WHEREAS, the theme for Stand Against Racism 2016: “On A Mission for Girls of Color” will amplify the national discussion about the impacts of institutional and structural racism on the lives of girls of color;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby thank the Greater Pittsburgh YWCA for its dedication to eliminating racism, and declare Friday, April 29, 2016 to be “Greater Pittsburgh YWCA Stand Against Racism Day” in Allegheny County.
