Proclamation declaring the week of May 6 through May 12, 2016 as “Nurses Week” in Allegheny County.

Body...

WHEREAS, “National Nurses Week” begins May 6 and ends May 12 each year, in conjunction with Florence Nightingale’s birthday; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has 218,000 registered nurses, including approximately 55,000 licensed practical nurses and 12,000 advanced practice registered nurses, which makes nursing the largest licensed health care profession in our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the depth and breadth of the registered nursing profession meets the different and emerging health care needs of the American population in a wide range of settings; and

WHEREAS, professional nursing has been demonstrated to be an indispensable component in the safety and quality of care of hospitalized patients; and

WHEREAS, the demand for registered nursing services will be greater than ever because of the aging of the American population, the continuing expansion of life-sustaining technology, and the explosive growth of home health care services; and

WHEREAS, this year’s theme is “Culture of Safety: It Starts With YOU” in celebration of the ways in which nurses strive to provide high quality patient care and improve our health care system;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council does hereby declare the week of May 6 through May 12, 2016 as NURSES WEEK and that all residents of Allegheny County join in acknowledging the nurses who care for all of us, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the residents of Allegheny County celebrate nursing’s accomplishments and efforts to improve our health care systems.
