Proclamation declaring Wednesday, May 11, 2016 to be “Breathe Pennsylvania Day” in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, Breathe Pennsylvania, headquartered in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania is a non-profit organization that helps the residents of southwestern Pennsylvania achieve and maintain optimal lung health through education, prevention, awareness and direct services; and

 

WHEREAS, for the last century, Breathe Pennsylvania has been a pioneer in the fight against lung disease. In 1905, the Pittsburgh Sanatorium, known as the “House on the Hill,” was opened by the organization in what is now the Hill District. The hospital provided local tuberculosis patients with the only known remedy for the disease at the time, i.e. rest and fresh air; and

 

WHEREAS, today, Breathe Pennsylvania provides pediatric and adult asthma education and patient assistance, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) support and outreach, tuberculosis education and smoking cessation to residents in the following 10 counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland; and

 

WHEREAS, throughout its rich history, Breathe Pennsylvania has been a leader in providing people with the tools and knowledge to become advocates for their own lung health;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council does hereby declare Wednesday, May 11, 2016 to be BREATHE PENNSYLVANIA DAY in Allegheny County, and we thank the board of directors, staff, volunteers and all those that support the mission to help western Pennsylvanians breathe better and live healthier.
