Proclamation congratulating Mr. Glenn E. Kempf, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin, for being named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest military service distinction.

WHEREAS, Mr. Glenn E. Kempf, a resident of West Mifflin and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin, has been named Chevalier (Knight) of the Legion of Honor by the French Republic for his actions as a soldier in the United States Army while serving in Normandy and the Ardennes in World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, while assigned to the 45th Field Hospital as a medical technician, Mr. Kempf landed in Normandy on June 7, 1944 on Omaha Beach. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge later that same year; and

 

WHEREAS, among the other awards and decorations Mr. Kempf earned for his military service are the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Kempf is a graduate of the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children. Following his discharge from the Army in December 1945, Mr. Kempf worked as a machinist for the Continental Can Company, from where he retired after 30 years of service. An active member of Holy Spirit Church in West Mifflin, Mr. Kempf has eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate Mr. Glenn E. Kempf for being inducted into the French Legion of Honor as a Chevalier (Knight), the highest decoration bestowed in France, and we thank you for your courage and dedicated service in World War II.
