Proclamation presented to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church upon the occasion of its 110th anniversary and Pittsburgh’s largest Ukrainian annual festival from July 27-30, 2016.

WHEREAS, St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, a historic landmark located at 116 Ella Street, McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, was founded by Ukrainian immigrants in 1906. This year the parish is celebrating its 110th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, the religious and ethnic fabric that makes Western Pennsylvania and the greater McKees Rocks area such a great place to worship, live, work and play will be celebrated during St. Mary’s Annual Parish Festival from July 27-July 30, 2016; and

WHEREAS, St. Mary’s Ukrainian Festival was first held 11 years ago in the backyard of the parish rectory with the goal of promoting Ukrainian culture to the people of McKees Rocks. Under the initiative of Father Timothy Tomson and a dedicated group of volunteers, the festival has grown to become one of the largest, most recognized Ukrainian festivals in the greater Pittsburgh area; and

WHEREAS, the festival will kick-off with a parade and a memorial service for all veterans, police officers, and firefighters; the festival offers traditional Ukrainian foods, such as pierogies, kobasi, and holubtsi, religious items, Ukrainian collectibles, and live entertainment, including performances by The Marcel’s, The Jaggerz, The Shades Of Blue and The Coasters;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church upon the momentous occasion of its 110th Anniversary, and we thank the parish for St. Mary’s 2016 “Ukie Fest” and sharing the Ukrainian culture with the people of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
