Proclamation congratulating the Scott Dairy Farm in Oakdale for receiving the 2016 Bicentennial Farm Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

Body...

WHEREAS, on June 30, 2016, Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding visited the Scott Dairy Farm in Oakdale to celebrate the farm’s nearly 227-year history; and

WHEREAS, John Scott’s 180-acre farm was originally purchased by his great grandfather, fourth generation, Alexander McCandless, Jr. in 1789. The McCandless family was the first non-native American family to occupy the land, where they harvested wheat, rye and corn. A new home replaced the original log cabin in 1845, which is now the oldest building on the farm and is currently still in use; and

WHEREAS, today, Scott Dairy Farm is the last operating dairy farm in Allegheny County; and

WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture administers the Century and Bicentennial Farm Program, which helps promote the strength and durability of Pennsylvania’s farm families and recognizes families that have been farming the same land for 100 years and 200 years, respectively. Allegheny County is home to two bicentennial farms, including the Scott Dairy Farm, and six century farms;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate Scott Dairy Farm for receiving the 2016 Bicentennial Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and we thank the Scott Dairy Farm for their unwavering commitment to both the past and future of agriculture in Allegheny County.
