Proclamation declaring Thursday, October 27, 2016 to be “Jumpstart Pittsburgh Read for the Record Day” in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® is a national campaign that was launched over a decade ago to address the educational inequities that leave too many children unprepared for kindergarten; and

 

WHEREAS, on Thursday, October 27, 2016, Jumpstart Pittsburgh will host its 11th annual Read for the Record event at more than 50 preschool classrooms around the City of Pittsburgh, where children and adults will gather to learn, laugh, and read this year’s campaign book, The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach; and

 

WHEREAS, Jumpstart Pittsburgh, headquartered at the University of Pittsburgh Office of PittServes, will host events at Crescent Early Childhood Center in Homewood and the Hosanna House in Wilkinsburg, and has partnered with Foster Grandparents, Reading Is FUNdamental Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children; and

 

WHEREAS, on October 27, 2016, Jumpstart Pittsburgh will host more than 150 volunteers that will gather on Pitt’s campus and travel to classrooms, reaching thousands of children in the Pittsburgh area and helping them develop the language and literacy skills they need to be ready for kindergarten; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby commend Jumpstart Pittsburgh for encouraging children to read, and we hereby declare October 27, 2016 to be “Jumpstart Pittsburgh Read for the Record Day” in Allegheny County.
