Proclamation recognizing the November 19, 2016 presentation of five medals, including a Purple Heart, to The Honorable Raymond T. Book for his meritorious service during World War II.

WHEREAS, on November 19, 2016, more than seven decades after being wounded during combat in World War II, The Honorable Raymond T. Book, 91, was presented with five medals for meritorious service, including a Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Book honorably served in the U.S. Army as a sharpshooter with the 8th Infantry Division and the 41st Field Artillery. His unit was assigned to different armies throughout the war, including General George S. Patton’s army; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Book fought during the Normandy invasion and in the third wave of the Battle of the Bulge. While being treated at a medical facility, the staff failed to submit the proper paperwork that would have secured his Purple Heart medal; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Book returned home after the war and earned an associate’s degree from Robert Morris College and furthered his education at Point Park College. He worked at J&L Steel Corporation for 32 years. He served as a member of the Whitehall Borough Council and as a state representative for two terms. Mr. Book and his wife, Mary Ann, are the parents of five children and the proud grandparents of 11 grandchildren;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby honor and thank The Honorable Raymond T. Book for serving our country with distinction during World War II, and we extend our deepest gratitude to Mr. Book and thank him for his sacrifice.
