Proclamation congratulating the Allegheny County Airport Authority upon the occasion of the Pittsburgh International Airport being named the “2017 Airport of the Year” by Air Transport World Magazine.

WHEREAS, Air Transport World (ATW) magazine, a longtime, respected industry resource, has named Pittsburgh International Airport as its 2017 Airport of the Year citing its rapid ascent in air service gains as well as increased community engagement; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh International is the first U.S. airport to be added to the magazine’s distinguished honoree list that also includes Hong Kong International, London Heathrow and Singapore Changi; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh International serves 68 nonstop destinations, a 75 percent increase over the 37 destinations available in 2014. The airport has seen multiple new carriers enter the market, and the airport finished 2016, its busiest year since 2008, with more than 8.3 million passengers, posting a third straight year of gains after more than a decade of decline. The airport and its Board of Directors have also spearheaded a community coalition to support air service that includes business and tourism organizations, elected officials at the county, state and local levels, foundations, and colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh International Airport will be featured in the next issue of Air Transport World magazine, and will be formally honored at ATW’s 43rd Annual Airline Industry Achievement Award Ceremony in New York on March 28, 2017;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate the Allegheny County Airport Authority upon the occasion of Air Transport World magazine designating the Pittsburgh International Airport as its 2017 Airport of the Year, and we commend your dedication to excellence, making Pittsburgh International Airport one of the best airports in the World.
