Proclamation congratulating the Montour Trail Council upon the occasion of the Montour Trail being named the “2017 Trail of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Body...

WHEREAS, Allegheny County’s wealth of trails provides an abundance of opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy our county’s spectacular natural resources; and

WHEREAS, the Montour Trail, stretching from Coraopolis on the Ohio River to Clairton on the Monongahela River, is one of the longest non-motorized suburban rail-trails in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the Montour Trail crosses the Panhandle Trail near McDonald, contains several branches and connectors including a bikeway to Pittsburgh International Airport, and the Great Allegheny Passage, which stretches more than 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, in 1989, the Montour Trail Council, an all-volunteer organization, was established to oversee the construction, maintenance and operation of the 63-mile Montour Trail. With over 400,000 annual users, the Montour Trail Council relies on volunteers, friends’ groups, and community organizations to keep the trail in excellent condition; and

WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has selected the Montour Trail as its “2017 Trail of the Year” based on quality, benefits to the region, a strong volunteer network and multitude of partnerships. Along with statewide recognition, the award brings with it a $10,000 mini-grant to support public use of the trail;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate the Montour Trail Council upon the occasion of the Montour Trail being named the “2017 Trail of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and we thank the hundreds of dedicated volunteers who contributed tens of thousands of hours over the course of the Montour Trail Council’s 28-year history, help...
