Proclamation naming April 2017 as “Fair Housing Month” in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, April 2017 is Fair Housing Month and marks the 49th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act signed by U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson on April 11, 1968; and
WHEREAS, the federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status or disability; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County includes the bases under the Fair Housing Act and also prohibits discrimination because of age, ancestry or place of birth, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, and status as a user or trainer of a guide or support animal; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County Council recognizes the work of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Allegheny County Human Relations Commission, the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations, and the Fair Housing Partnership of Greater Pittsburgh, which ensures the protection of fair housing rights; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County supports equal housing opportunity and housing choice in accordance with the Fair Housing Act not only during Fair Housing Month in April, but throughout the entire year;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby proclaims April 2017 as “Fair Housing Month” in Allegheny County and encourages all Allegheny County individuals and organizations, public and private, to join and work together in this observance for free and equal housing treatment and opportunity for all.
