This Certificate of Recognition is presented to Mr. Melvyn “Mel” Achtzehn upon the momentous occasion of his 90th birthday. Mr. Achtzehn was born in 1927 in Amyville, Pennsylvania. Mel has been working since the age of 14 and following his work as a paperboy, he worked for George O’Malley’s gas station, supermarkets, U.S. Steel Duquesne Works, Atlantic Refining Co., Gregris’ Funeral Home, an auto parts store and operated his own gas station for some time. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theatre. He married Norma Roviaro in 1949 and they had 4 children, Cheryl, Lori, Bonnie and Guy. Mel has six granddaughters. Mel is very active in the community, including serving The Jaycees, Rotary (Past President), American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus (He has held every office including President), GBU, Prince Humbert Club, Duquesne Moose, and the Duquesne Business Advisory Committee (President since its inception in 1977). He is an active member of Holy Name Parish and serves as a Eucharistic Minister. In 1984, Mel was named “Man of the Year” by the Chamber of Commerce and in 1987, he received the J.C. Penney Co. award for service to his community. He served as a Duquesne City Councilman for 6 and a half years, and is the former Mayor of Duquesne. He has served as President of the Steel Valley Regional Planning Commission, Vice-President of the Steel Valley Council of Governments, Mon Valley Initiative board member, Mon Valley Educational Consortium member and a member of the policy board for the revitalization of the City Center of Duquesne and the Industrial Park of McKeesport. Mel still serves as President of the Duquesne Business Advisory Committee and works for the Maloy-Schleifer Funeral Home.
